I grew up In Traverse City, Michigan on Spider Lake, which does not have spiders in it, but looks like a spider from the sky. My mom and I lived at the end of one hairy leg. I spent my days playing in the lake, the woods, the swamp, and the living room where I had a swing hanging from the rafters and all the chairs were overturned, pretending to be something else.
I earned a Bachelor's of Arts in English and a Bachelor's of Arts in Sociology from Michigan State University where I fell in love with an Ethiopian restaurant called Altu's and a local band named Steppin' In It.
I earned a Master's of Arts in Creative Writing (Poetry Concentration) from Northern Michigan University where I fell in love with (and worked at) a restaurant called Sweet Water Cafe and a bookstore called Snowbound Books. I also fell in love with a lake, which is actually a sea, called Superior.
I live in Ferndale, MI near Detroit with my husband and daughter and dog where I am in love with writing and reading and activism. I look for art and joy in everything I see and hear and taste and touch and smell.
I have poems published in literary journals such as Gulf Coast, 42 Opus, and Paradigm.
I am a member of the amazing Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), Tara Lazar's StoryStorm, Julie Hedlund's 12 x 12 challenge, and a wonderful critique group.
I am currently seeking representation for my picture book manuscripts.
